The Keep Salon

January '14

The Keep Salon prides itself in luxury services in the art and profession of hair coloring and styling. Long time L’Oreal Professionnel National Artist, Sebastian Langman-Kirtley is a master colorist and the owner of the salon.

The keep is a fortified tower located within a castle where nobility resides during a siege. Historically a space for the elite and royal, The Keep Salon wanted to emulate this idea of magnificence through the stages of their services.

With existing vaulted ceilings and luscious amounts of natural light, the spatial organization was designed to respond to these prominent characteristics. Sebastian and his partner’s vision for the ultimate self-indulgent experience begins as a client comes in through a private back entrance in a classic Cape Cod style commercial building where they are then transformed into a place of modern gothic luxury. The reception and waiting area is separated by tall display shelves exploiting the sparkling, colorful bottles of the newest hair products. The deep warm color tones and use of leather and antiqued metals create a dynamic sense of luxury. Beyond the display shelves, the second more intimate space contains the hair stations, each in front of an embellished mirror hung on a floating wall. The final space contains reclining plush washing stations where complimentary massages and aromatic therapy is provided.

Each space is connected by a perpendicular wall of windows that provide natural light to each space. The bottom row of windows was frosted to create an intimate, more private experience and displace the clients from their reality. These design elements provide a staging ground for the stylist to showcase his talents.
